Wim Catrysse, Outpost, 2018

Digging ever deeper, a dark perspective on a society which has reached a terminal industrial stage.

Outpost zooms in on the grim reality of an isolated society of miners in Barentsburg, the northernmost settlement of Russia, located in the polar landscape of Svalbard. In recent years, the mining activities became less and less profitable. But because of the geopolitical and strategic importance of the Arctic archipelago, Russia is keen to maintain its presence. Although Catrysse strays away from explicit statements on the greater political context, the viewer can not but notice a state of denial. A dark perspective on a society which seems to have reached a terminal industrial stage, heading towards total exhaustion.

Outpost had its first existence in an arrangement for the music theater performance Earth Diver (2016), a production of Muziektheater Transparant and ChorWerk Ruhr for the Ruhrtriennale.
