— Wim Catrysse
Wim Catrysse (b. 1973) lives and works in Antwerp.
Since the late 1990s, Catrysse has rigorously explored the boundaries of visual constructions within his video works, initially grounded in self-designed spatial installations that served as catalysts or choreographic devices for performance based work, and more recently, in the primordial characteristics of elemental landscapes, often shaped or exploited by industrial forces. These landscapes now act as the trigger for his explorations, examined through a more observational lens. His artistic practice is defined by an ongoing dialogue between a predetermined conceptual framework and its subversion, where the tension between the rational and the instinctive forms the core of his work.
Catrysse’s moving image works often suggest an underlying threat, a sense of unease, prompting a deeper, more engaged response. His method embraces the interplay between raw instinct and calculated technique, resulting in works that challenge the viewer to tackle the layers of meaning and perception at play.
His work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions and featured in the programs of prestigious institutions, including, amongst others, S.M.A.K., Ghent; Ruhrtriennale, Essen; Kunstmuseum Bonn; Jeu de Paume, Paris; Argos, Brussels; MuHKA, Antwerp; CCA, Tel Aviv; Nikolaj Kunsthal, Copenhagen; Arts Santa Mònica, Barcelona; Extra City, Antwerp; HKW, Berlin; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam; and MACRO, Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome.
Furthermore, Catrysse has adapted several of his works and integrated them into scenographies he co-designed for theatre performances, further expanding his multidisciplinary approach.
